Google's augmented reality glasses coming by year end: NYT
It's a no-brainer, at least for the nerds who read a lot of William Gibson growing up: a pair of glasses that uses image recognition, sensors and GPS to tell you what you're looking at as you stroll through town. According to the New York Times, Google will introduce a pair of these by the end of 2012.
The report by Nick Bilton, citing unnamed Google employees, furthers earlier leaks published by Seth Weintraub on the 9to5 Google blog.
The heads-up-display specs will not be a peripheral to a smartphone, but be a system in and of itself. It'll run Google's Android operating system, of course, and apparently track your head movement with a combination of sensors so that it can display appropriate information based on what you're looking at. A front-facing camera would take pictures and possibly aid in sensing your surroundings. You would also use head motions to scroll and click, says Weintraub.
Weintraub reported that the glasses look like the discontinued Oakley Thump model, which may or may not be a good thing. Regardless, if these things can live up to their "Terminator"-like promise, you may not care what you look like wearing them.
