App turns your iPad or iPhone into a 3-D display

i3D

A little while ago we saw a demonstration of an appwhich claimed that it would turn your iPhone or iPad into a 3-D display — without ever forcing you to put on any goofy glasses. Now that app is actually available for download.

The app is called i3D and is free in the Apple App Store. We took it for a quick test drive and found that it basically works as advertised.

By using your IOS device's front-facing camera and tracking your head movements — this really isn't as creepy as it sounds — the app is able to adjust an image and provide a consistent faux 3-D effect. You're not exactly going to feel like an image is leaping off your iPad or iPhone screen, but you'll still get a pretty neat effect on a device which doesn't have any sort of special 3-D display.

The app is pretty limited at the moment — there are only a few demo images through which you can swipe — but it's still great to see that it works reasonably well.
